and doing a search for the files name?

system files stay in use and won't let you delete them.

You might be able to delete it in safe mode. Check your computer manual for the keys to hold down while rebooting to go into safe mode. You will have to select safe mode when the screen prompts you.

Safe mode turns off all non-essential programs and let's you trouble shoot problems.

    Red face

How do you delete a system file? I've got this file that was downloaded while I was *ahem* surfing the net, and now it's sitting in windows/temp and keeps trying to use the modem.

When I try to delete it, it says it's a system file and won't let me touch it.

    Bah.

Success! The file was called msldf.exe and in the end I (cunningly) used notepad to open it, then deleted all the goobledegook, and then saved it. After that I was confident at least it wouldn't work. And, in fact, Windows let me delete it. Phew. Thanks for the help, though. I'll remember the safe mode thing for the future.

Asis' idea is good. What's the name of the file? Windows shouldn't be putting an actual system file in the temp directiry. Like Rich said, it could be a virus, or even spyware.

Let us know how it goes.

That was an interesting solution there. Have to mentally file that away.

<font size="2" face="Comic sans ms, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thanks, I made it up myself. I call it "the timid schoolboy flirting" method, since it involves throwing a notepad in its general direction and hoping for the best.

And, Asis, the REAL happy ending is that I have friend I can rely on for help.

*everyone laughs heartily and the end credits roll*

I said "friend", but I meant "friends". Plural. As in more than one. At least I hope so.

PS, I had a dream about going to an StP convention last night. I met Branflakes again. Can't remember anything else, though.

Glad you were able to fix your problem and that we could help (or really figured it out yourself, but had wonderful suggestions from others).

You know, we're just going to have to meet one day, since you keep dreaming of me.
